Hey, all. Thanks for modeling in this year's windows!

I'm not producing model cd's this year. Instead, my work is going up on smugmug. That's http://teamnoir.smugmug.com

If you were in the windows this year, (or any other year, for that matter - I'll be uploading past years soon), drop me a note either here or by email, ice@noir.com, and I'll send you a coupon so you can "buy" downloads for $0 cost. You can also order prints there pretty easily and at not too bad a price.

Also, I'm booked for another art show at Citadel in Fall 2010. I'm sure I'll send out more info then, but shots from this year will be included in that show. Last time I hung close to 50 gallery wrapped, giclee on canvas prints in various sizes ranging from 8"x12" up to 36"x54". I probably won't hang as many this time but I'm sure they'll still be just as gorgeous. This show, like the last, will be composed entirely of the nonfacial portraits many of you have seen on your proof sheets.

All of my books are still available online as well.

Nov 7 2009: Dark Garden Window Modeling Workshop, One Session Only/One Day Only!

If you want to just come, please attend, it will be crowded as always. It will be great to see you.

Long time modeler, participated in modeling in 2008, you don't have to attend, just get the form online, print it out and then fill it out from Cat's website for all things Dickens Fair Missive-ish (we may have some during booth build days in mid November weekends/Dress Rehearsal Sunday)

BUT if you DID NOT model in the Dark Garden Booth windows during the last year's run of Dickens Fair (Dec 2008), or last year was the FIRST TIME you ever have participated in modeling in the window... You must attend this workshop session to be able to have the joy & honor that is being stared at by countless throngs of customers and the many, many Participants who should know better than to hang outside the front of the Booth for more than a few minutes (yes, I'm looking at you sir/madame) for the 2009 Dickens Fair.

See you there.

Gordon (wow, I haven't signed onto Tribe for months...) Mackenzie

I'm looking for a lace veil that I could use for the closing window this sunday. I'm looking for something that would mimic this portrait:

I"ve tried purchase likely vintage peices the past two weeks on eBay but all the auctions went to high for me :(

Howdy to anyone actually reading Tribe still - I'm looking for:
A metal gold-panning pan
A small, decently clean pickaxe
A period or peri-oid shovel.
Any period or peri-oid stuffed ducklings you might happen to have.

You can probably guess my window idea from those clues. :)

Models needed Saturday September 27th - late night

Hello Friends,
There's a really neat event that my friend Amelia Mae Paradise of Diamond Daggers Productions is putting on called Perverse Cabaret.
She's asked Dark Garden to provide living mannequins to do 1/2 hour shifts...kind of like Dicken's but in a quirky, fun, queer, fetishy environment. She's asked that our models be dressed in fun/fetish clothes, the wilder the better. What a fun change from the opposite - Dicken's: "cute, sweet, restrained"
Models will be up on pedestals...and the dressing area is crowded and dark...but fun !!!
It's at Fat City, across the street from the DNA on 11th St. in San Francisco
Are you interested?
Saturday the 27th..no pay, but a really great environment. How familiar....and yes, it's the night before Folsom St Fair
please get back to me asap
Thanks so much !!
Autumn

Cow Palace Front Page News - Public Forum Tonight!

Hello!

Note: Kevin says We will have signs for people to carry tonight that read, "Stop The Bulldozers, SaveTheCowPalace.com".

Check out this mornings chron (link below). The article is very well written and it drives home important nostalgia (family) vs. big development theme which is critical to our success. We are NOT DONE. Hit the Chronicle comment board. We want to flood it.

www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi

Also, if you are so inclined, please take a minute right away to call the Daly City Manager and tell her she is wrong...

Daly City Manager Patricia Martel has just gone on record as saying the Cow Palace contributes NOTHING to the community. This is dead wrong.

Help us get two hundred calls to her office as soon as possible. Flood her lines. Christmas, dogs, trains, ice skaters, circuses, Globe Trotters, and millions of dollars in income to hotels, restaurants, gas stations and jobs contribute nothing.? Right.

PROGRAM INTO YOUR CELL AND CALL ALL DAY, EVERY DAY:

(650) 991-8127 and (650) 991-8092.

While you're at it, call Senator Yee's office again and again...and again.

(650) 340-8840 Local Office, 415) 557-7857 SF office, and 916) 651-4008 Sac office. Call 'em all. Senator Yee measures public opinion every day! He is a math guy. Make him count you. Make his staff rue the day he tried to cancel Christmas and destroy California history!

Plan to show up tonight Thursday 2/28/08 at the Daly City public forum if you can, or ask someone you know in the area to come. Kevin will be there at 6:00, the meeting starts at 7:00.

www.ci.daly-city.ca.us/city_n...fo.html

The Bayshore Community Center is a very new building with a library. It's right behind the Cow Palace on the hill...

Please forward this email to your list at the risk of being redundant.

This is the moment. A very strong showing tonight will send a strong message. We will be sure the new media is there. Attire: Daly City Resident circa 1980 to present. If you can organize costumes like giant flowers, trains, cheer leaders, Elvis...even a few Dickensian characters, go for it. Can someone get Martin on a plane from London please? ... We can work on a big costume thing for the next forum (see below) which will keep the issue in the media. Just showing up tonight is the important thing.

Thank you!!! >>>PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL<<<

We CAN win this.

COW PALACE DESTRUCTION PUBLIC FORUMS:

Save the Cow Palace

URGENT MESSAGE FROM RED BARN PRODUCTIONS ABOUT
THE DICKENS FAIR AND THE COW PALACE

State Senator Leland Yee Ph.D., under pressure
from the Daly City Council, is proposing to
“surplus” the Cow Palace and sell it to Daly
City. Daly City will then sell most of the land
to condo developers and pocket the
profits. Letter writing WILL stop this. Senator
Yee has ONLY heard from Daly City. Let him know
you oppose selling the Cow Palace!!!

Here is a link to Senator Yee's website and his
press release on the legislation he submitted
Friday February 22nd to the State Legislature,
(no voting date is set - but it could be
soon). This bill wrongly proposes to SELL the Cow Palace to Daly City!
<http://dist08.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp?Type=B_PR&SEC=%7BEFA496BC-EDC8-4E38-9CC7-68D37AC03DFF%7D&DE=%7B49C40B5B-DD5B-48FD-A292-B04E80714184%7D>http://dist08.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp?Type=B_PR&SEC={EFA496BC-EDC8-4E38-9CC7-68D37AC03DFF}&DE={49C40B5B-DD5B-48FD-A292-B04E80714184}

We must defeat SB1527 or the Dickens Fair will likely die.
It would take years, if it’s even possible, to
relocate and resurrect the Dickens Fair.
Red Barn Productions has studied all the venues
that could physically host the Dickens Fair and
there are NO other places that currently
work. All are either too expensive, too small,
are unavailable between Thanksgiving and
Christmas OR require unaffordable retrofits in
order to be permitted for public assembly. So,
Save the Cow Palace and Save The Dickens Fair. It's that simple AND
serious.

Here's the scoop:

The Cow Palace has a perfectly good plan to meet
the needs of the local community and Daly City by
providing them 13 acres of its’ unused
land. Yes, rock concerts bring public problems,
according to Daly City, but they also bring
public $$$ to the local community. Senator Yee's
Legislation SB1527 is doubly wrong. It proposes
we, as California State Citizens, sell OUR Cow
Palace to Daly City so they can bulldoze it and
profit by selling it to private developers. If
that isn't bad enough, SB1527 also deprives us of
our RIGHT to use a facility that WE own!!

This is like selling off a chunk of Golden Gate
Park because a nearby neighborhood proclaims
“unanimously” it needs more space for
development. It doesn't work that way. We get
to vote too...by writing letters and emails and
calling his office. Officials can't just decide
to take a public asset and sell it…unless it is
truly “surplus”. The Cow Palace is not
“surplus”. We must stop this proposed sell-off of our property.

Here's what you can do to stop SB1527 and SAVE THE COW PALACE:

#1 Act Quickly. Senator Yee may believe he is
serving the public, but he has only heard from
Daly City. Let’s give him the other 99% of the
picture before he gets any further down this road.

Write a Letter
Write to Senator Yee today. Quickly. Early
letters are more powerful. Send personal letters
to the address below the sample text at the
bottom of this notice. Get it in today’s mail, so
he receives it on Monday or Tuesday.

Write an Email
Personal emails may be sent via his website
“contact” at page:

Emails are not as good as snail mail letters, but
they are also effective. Be sure to write in
“SB1527” as it is so new it is not on his issue list. …

Call the Office
You can pick up the phone and call his office,
see
<http://dist08.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC=%7B1317EB89-B124-4498-9C50-9A0EA3C89E91%7D>http://dist08.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={1317EB89-B124-4498-9C50-9A0EA3C89E91}

YOU DO NOT NEED TO MENTION THE DICKENS
FAIR. SIMPLY VOICE YOUR OPPOSITION TO
SB1527. That’s it! Give reasons only if you
want. The important thing is to contact him NOW.

#2 IF YOU LOVE THE DICKENS FAIR, forward this
message to groups, friends and individuals and
ask them to contact Senator Yee immediately.

#3 IF YOU LIVE in Senator Yee’s District #8 - see
map on his site:
…Contact him AS one of his constituents,
(District 8 includes most of San Francisco in the
West and South, and goes most of the way down the
Peninsula). It is a very large district!

Sample Letter:

Dear Senator Yee,

As a California Citizen, and resident of (…your
city…), I object to your proposed legislation to
“sell the California Cow Palace”. While you may
be responding to the needs of Daly City, please
respect my rights to use this public
facility. It may need work, but how many
California public buildings need upgrading? If
you want to help Daly City bring in new
supermarkets and shopping to the area, let the
Cow Palace deal directly with developers and Daly
City to make use of the 13 acres the Cow Palace
doesn't need. This will preserve my rights while
helping the lives of local area citizens. It
will also continue the flow of millions of
dollars into the local economy annually. These
revenues, generated by me and many thousands of
others who use the Cow Palace, also help pay for
police to patrol the area year-round as well as during big events.

Please reconsider SB1527. There is a better way
to help Daly City and Bayshore than destroying
the Cow Palace. I use it every year and plan to
continue to use it for many years to come. It is
not “surplus”; it is a vital community and cultural asset.

Thank you,

Signed,

(you)

Mail letter to both his office addresses:

I am missing an string of quartz crystal beads that slipped off my wrist (I was wearing it as a bracelet in the champagne DG window). I thought it slipped into my basket, but sadly not. It was my mother's, and I think I have learned my lesson bringing her things to fair.

Has anyone seen a small crystal shard in the wicker chair window during break down, by the way?

I just got back from seeing Disney's "Enchanted" (and it is a lovely bit of fun) and wanted to mention to all the DG fans that I think someone at the Disney animation studios has been visiting DG. Or am I the only one who thinks the animated version of Queen Narissa looks an awful lot like a certain proprietress?

<<Fourth weekend fo Five! Only casualty was a champagne glass.....>>

About 20-30 years ago, my mother (and my sister and me, for that matter) lived across the street from an Persian man--somewhat slimey, always leering, rather chatty. He seemed unremarkable as men go in his chauvanistic ways (we were three women alone across the street--cause for chattiness, I suppose). He came and went sporadically. Traveled a great deal.

After one trip, he came home with a rather young, blond wife, who spoke little English. We found out in short order that she was Czech, and had known him for not so long a time. We came to know her rather well, as she was very alone, needed to learn English, and had a cad for a husband, from a western perspective. She came to us to commiserate, to complain, to find a point of reference in a very foreign country, to find a family. It turns out foreign men very often went to her country, wait along the larger avenues, and bribe young women into sexual encounters with offers of gifts, usually levis, and maybe money.

My mother especially became close to her. My mother was lonely too. Men had disappointed and mistreated her greatly--so they were kindred souls. Over the years, this (not so young anymore) blond Czech lady would travel back home to her native town of Prague, bringing souvenirs for all of us, especially my mother, her surrogate mother. On one trip, she brought two beautiful carved crystal vases for us--Prague has many crystal factories that are know world-wide (their wares are reknowned for their quality and beauty--all types of hand-cut crystal goods). She also brought a fabulous set of 6 crystal champagne glasses that she also gave to my mother with 6 small crystal teardrops dangling on the end of silver chains to accompany them--the Czechs don't care so much evidently for all those bubbles, so they hang little "bubble dispensers" in the glasses of wine to dispel the bubbles (the French would be aghast).

My mother had these glasses for many years, and we occasionally even would use them. They were so special to her, so exotic, so foreign, so beautiful. In the meantime, the Czech lady had a daughter by the slimey Persian man, put up with his abuses for some additional number of years, then divorced him, got almost nothing out of the divorce, worked in low-paying department store jobs to support herself and her daughter, struggled along, and stayed friends with my mother.

The Persian man eventually got cancer, and on his deathbed, remarried the Czech woman. This act seemed to be something done in his culture, along with not eating with infidels (we once went over to his house, invited for dinner, and sat with his wife eating in one room while he ate with his son from a previous marriage and his brother in a different room--causing a tirade of verbal protest and complaint of chauvanistic inequitude from both my mother and frankly the rest of us, so completely unacquainted with Muslim ways).

And we kept on over the years drinking out of the champagne glasses, only on the most special of occasions--Christmas, New Years.

My mother died rather suddenly ten years ago. It was brutal, and too soon, and we all fell apart and away from each other. Me, my two sisters and I. We argued over rings, and cookie jars that we had grown attached to, and champagne glasses. We divided up the six glasses, two for each of us. My eldest sister has always seemed to hate me, and went back to Texas (a place she chose--frankly, it suits her), and I haven't seen her since the funeral. My middle sister who lives in Tennessee whom I was closer to, tried to keep up for a time with me, and I with her. After the funeral, she sent me her two champagne glasses. I had been the one who stayed near my mother and took care of her during all the years. She said it was only fair--I had been the one taking care of things, and I had toasted many a holiday out of those glasses.

The Czech lady called me for months and months, trying to build on our relationship since my mother, her friend, was gone, trying to hold on to the memory of the relationship she shared with my mother. I, unfortunately, was too hurt to be a serrogate for my mother. One too many unaswered phone calls, and I presently have no idea where she is. She inherited a house from her Persian husband/ex-husband, and her daughter graduated from UC Berkeley. I wish her well.

And the champagne glasses. I haven't touched them for years. When I started doing the "champagne" motif in the DG windows a couple of years ago, I thought of them, but never dared use them--too valuable, too delicate. Then for some reason this year, last week, I thought they might appreciate an airing. To be displayed for their beauty. Like pet pups wanting to be walked and admired. I don't know what I was thinking. Maybe I was wanting to let go of a lot of locked away "things."

If anyone at DG would like to try to find the missing shard, I would appreciate it. I tried to piece the broken glass back together and there is apparently one shard missing. It must have fallen down the front of the platform when it broke. If it isn't found, I will put the broken glass away. It sits on the dining room table, but it needs to be put away and forgotten again. I need to put it away--maybe as well as a lot of other things.

I just thought people ought know. It just wasn't "a champagne glass."

So I've been happily modeling in the Dark Garden windows for four (or more?) years now. And in unrelated news, I am about 6 months away from graduating with a Masters degree that will land me a sweet job as a librarian [woo!] (and please keep the sexy librarian comments to yourself, I've heard most of them already) ;)

This year, for the first time, the thought crossed my mind as I was looking at pictures of myself on the Flickr account of someone I don't know-- "should I be worried about this?" I'm totally aware of the photogenic nature of windows, and up until now I'd never given it a second thought (or if I did, it was a thought of gratitude that a photographer made me look so lovely). But now I'm not so sure. Not that I want to retract my release form or anything like that. I'm just thinking for the first time about the issue of my day job colliding with the 'alternative stuff' I do on the weekends. There's an undeniable public face to the librarian's job, and there's a little bit of credibility and reputation needed in order to be a respected resource for information. If (and this is a big IF) some pics of me in a Dark Garden corset somehow appeared in my work world, would it be a bad thing for me?

I guess I'm curious what other DG models think about this, especially if you are in a profession that's fairly straight-laced (or at least a profession that has that reputation-- though I don't know if there's any profession as apparently straight-laced as librarians! ha ha) Has anyone ever had some DG window photos come back to haunt them, or at least just be a little bit troublesome in a work-type of situation? Or am I just needlessly worrying? I appreciate all y'all's thoughts on this....

Yes, for the first time we had an accident in the windows which resulted in broken glass. I would like to assure the models that I carefully examined the rug before the next models entered the window. It would be beyond terrible if anyone were to be hurt due to a prop mishap.

This serves as a good reminder of a point I made both in the workshop and in the modeling guidelines pamphlet: If you have a valuable or fragile prop, you are responsible for it. If you are concerned about it being damaged, do not bring it.

Photographs - Contact Sheets & CD's

Once again this year I'm producing contact sheets and cd's. Both are my gifts to you as my thanks for modeling in the window and for signing the model release form.

If you've done a window this year and haven't seen a contact sheet for it, come find me some time this weekend. I hope to be caught up with contact sheets by this weekend.

I will also be doing cd's, but not until I've caught up with contact sheets. If you'd like a cd of my shots, please drop me a pm or an email with your name and a snail mail address to which you'd like it sent. I'll try to get some done before fair's out, but it's likely I'll need to mail it later.

For those who don't know...

Contact sheets are plain paper printouts of the shots I took that are worth seeing. They're printed kinda small, but they're enough to get an idea of what the window looked like. Easier to show around than laptops & cd's, potentially disposable, and I've been focusing my effort on getting these out ahead of the cd's. Basically they're a cheap and easy way to get visual feedback to you quickly.

Not all the shots on the contact sheets are good, mind you. I'll shoot people's backs if they present them in the window, or asses, or anything that probably shouldn't have been seen. If it's particularly bad, I'll open the window door and just tell you so that you can adjust, so there's nothing disasterous on the contact sheets. I'll also include shots with, say, children's faces on the contact sheets and the cd's, that I wouldn't put on a dvd or in a book. And sometimes shots with technical flaws like poor focus or exposure, because while the shot isn't artistically wonderful, I think there's some useful feedback in it anyway.

In case you're curious, I usually take about 35 - 250 shots per window. So far this year I've taken over 5000 shots, over 700 per day. Many of those are just multiples of the same shot. When I process, I pick the best of the multiples, throw the dups away, and throw away the ones with people walking in front of the camera, technically irretrievable shots, and just plain stupid ideas, (really, what _was_ I thinking then?). What ends up on the contact sheet is usually about 5 - 20 shots. The model cd's are just machine readable copies of the same shots which are on the contact sheets.

My show has been extended through April! So if you haven't seen it, there's still time.

Thursday night, April 17, 7pm - 10pm, I'll be holding a Gala Closing event. This will be an excellent time to see the show without paying the usual $20 admission to the club. And there won't be any play that night. So this will be an extra special time to see the show before it comes down.

I also have books of the shots from the show for sale. Three formats - large, medium, and teeny. A copy of the large one is on the counter in the booth. I have the others with me at fair for anyone who'd like to see.

Third Weekend Time-lapse Movie of the Dark Garden Corset Modeling Experience

Some have enjoyed the previous experiment...Here's a new installment...This time I've slowed down the frame per second rate in the conversion process from digital snaps to video from the previous 15 fps to 10 fps. The movie then gains a little more length in total overall time elapsed but it does make following individual window activity easier.

Busy weekend it was, successful on all accounts despite the brief several-minute power outage in the booth and in the time-lapse camera and my end of the day digital camera accidental drop onto the hard concrete wall of the cow shower (it survived yet another weekend at Dickens!).

As always, choose the size best for your bandwidth constraints, mute the video if you hate the music (or at work in a cubical office farm...Hi Ms. McAvoy!). There is an option on the lower right to see full screen playback (if your computer/quicktime supports it). Downloading is permitted.

I have a Kimono (maybe), a Fez (maybe), and some good ideas. If anyone has a turban, crown, incense jar, cool looking box, faux gold, or anything else Oriental that would fit the theme, that would help. If not I will wing it. :)

I've uploaded the images that I shot Friday in my LJ gallery (http://rmjwell.livejournal.com/715848.html).

The images are viewable by everyone but not downloadable; I will make the images available to the subjects who can then post them as they please. I picked this trick up from the ladies at Tease-o-Rama this year and it seemed to make folks happy.

Of course, if a model gives me permission to repost her pictures here, I will be happy to do so.

Enjoy!

Modeling credits?

I've gone back and forth a few times about whether/how/if to credit models on things like dvd's of photography from dickens, books of my photography, and now my show.

On the one hand, I think people like seeing their names and being credited. And perhaps more than most modeled photography, this stuff really is a collaboration in the sense that I provide almost nothing in the way of direction, you all handle your own costumes, poses, themes, make-up, etc.

On the other hand, I wonder if anyone is concerned about stalkers if their name is associated with their picture. Modeled photography without model credits is also quite common, either way is completely reasonable with respect to current practice.

My personal preference is that I'd prefer to handle everyone the same way. I don't much care whether you all get credits or no one does. But I'd like that a particular book or dvd be consistent.

So I'd like to take an informal straw poll. As a window model, how do you feel about being credited? Would you prefer that your name be associated with my shots of you? Or would you prefer that it not?

2007 Window Workshops

You asked for it, and we listened. This year there will be 2 Dark Garden Window Workshops. Thats 2 times to make this VERY important meeting... For those of you who are new let me explain. To be in a Dark Garden window, one of the requirements is that you attend Dark Garden's Window Workshop at the pre-Dicken's workshops. This year it will be held on the 1st Sat (Nov 3) and the 2nd Sunday (Nov 11th). Both will be in the 2nd period of workshops offered. Please check the missives for more information like exact time and locations.

Objectification - Gala Opening!

A photographic exhibit by Chris English in association with Citadel, (http://sfcitadel.org).

The show will run from October through December 2007 and there will be a Gala Opening on Sunday, Oct 21, from 3pm - 6pm.

For several years now I have been shooting the fabulous and gorgeous live models who grace the front windows of the Dark Garden Corsetry, (http://darkgarden.com), booth at the Dickens Fair, (http://dickensfair.com). I occasionally take a paraphelia shot - a picture of a boot, or a glove or the like.

In fall of 2006, I walked up to the window to shoot a picture of a model's boot, (and her single tail whip), and what with standing not two feet away from her, albeit separated by a pane of glass, I found myself embarrassed to be so obviously shooting her boot.

I noticed my embarrassment, backed up for a few seconds, and then proceeded to shoot the boot anyway. But the experience got me to thinking about how it's socially acceptable to shoot some parts of a person but not other parts and how shooting certain parts can be perceived as offensive.

So I challenged myself to take at least one shot of each model that did not include her eyes. The photographs included in this show are the result of that self challenge.

Dark Garden Orders for the Dickens Fair!

As we draw closer to The Dickens Fair, it is time for a Dark Garden update. The Great Dickens Christmas Fair will start, as you know, on November 23rd! We are proud to build upon our Foundation of the Empire award in 2006, and look forward to seeing you all at the booth. Unfortunately at this time, we cannot accept anymore custom corset orders without a rush fee. We do, however, invite you to try our Made-to-Order Ready-to-Wear styles; the Waist Cincher and the Sweetheart Victorian. As well as your old favourites, we have many lovely new fabrics approved for the fair--(Sal has already reserved her own!) Ready to Wear Orders must be placed no later than October 15th for delivery at dress rehearsal. Many thanks for your continued support and patronage through the years, your friends at Dark Garden.

Are you ready to own your own DG corset? Ready to order your next one? Want to bring someone with you to try one on?

Well you are in luck Dark Garden is going to be at the upcoming Northern California Pirate Festival

This event is happening June 16th and June 17th on the Vallejo waterfront mere steps from the ferry landing. The ferries will be running all day Saturday and Sunday, and I personally can't wait to see how many pirates arrive by sea!

The even more exciting news is that Dark Garden will be vending. Admission is FREE, and I expect that a good time will be had by all. So I would like to invite you to come see how much silly fun we can manage to have in different costumes than we wear at all those other events (or at least I get to wear a different costume- attendees can wear what they like so long as they are clothed, so go to town!)

More information can be had at:

http://www.norcalpiratefestival.com/mainpage.htm

and as a bonus if you click the link there is a truly lovely picture of Autumn.

Seriously, seeing people I haven't seen in a while makes these events for me, so come on by and say HI!

(Okay so Tia did most of the writing... but I did the copy and paste to bring it to you.)

August didn't accept them, but she loves my work. Seems that this year she's aiming to actually hang shows of particular artists for a few months. And I'm now booked to hang through the summer - June, July, August, over pride and over my birthday.

I have a lot of work to do and there's a lot I don't know. Eg, I'm going to need to find someone with more clue than I to help hang stuff. I'm planning to rent Citadel for an afternoon to hold an opening as well and I really have no clue how to publicize such an event.

Anyway, I'm excited.

Hear is a quote from the sight.

"Merging the class and elegance of a Renaissance Faire with
the freshness of a Fairy Festival and the chaos of a Burning Man event, into one..."

“I realize the word ‘change’ is terrifying to the old school faire folk, but this production company is going to let the market decide what direction the faire goes in.
If the consumer wants a mob of cheerleaders that appear to be off the set of a “Road Warrior” movie, running through the faire dancing up a storm, creating the illusion that a mob of patrons have taken over the faire. Followed by a similarly attired marching band playing a very hip march with a back beat that you can’t help but want to swing to... then that’s what we’ll give them..!”

Your Model Wrangler Thanks You!

We made it through Dickens Fair with flying colors. You listened during the workshop and you made your windows beautifully Victorian. You were superbly professional and things went very well this year. Sure, there were one or two little ripples, but it all smoothed out quickly.

Thank you for making my Dickens Fair gig such a delight. Thank you for your patience while I proselytized about dress reform. Thank you for your enthusiasm, beauty, creativity, and *sparkle* in the windows. A shout-out to the new models, especially those who have been thinking about modeling for several years, and took the leap this year.

I will be sending out the annual model survey some time this week, and would greatly appreciate your prompt response. I look forward to seeing all of you next October for the workshop.

To quote Dickens, "A merry Christmas to everybody! A happy New Year to all the world!"

Fingerless black knit glove (one)
Tarot Card Case (hard paper, one)

Unclaimed model stuff will unfortunately have to be turned over to the DF's 'Lost n Found' at end of this years run. Items are probably from second weekend.

From Miss McAvoy to all models:

"Place all items of apparel and gimcracks and flotsom and jetsam into the appropriately EMPTY bin when changing"

...That way you never have to go around the Fair scandelously one-gloved with your Tarot cards constantly scattering everywhere on the slightest tempest.

New Year's Eve "Camelot" Waltz Ball

nce again, we are having a formal "New Year's Eve Waltz Ball" at the International House 2299 Piedmont Berkeley December 31, 2006.

The theme this year is the "Camelot" Waltz.

Also again, we are pleased to have the Brassworks band, one of the nation's best Vintage Dance Bands to play waltzes, polkas, and some tangos, latin and swing music from 9pm to 12:30 am.

The Chevron Auditorium at the International House is a national historic landmark, built in 1927 and fully refurbished in the 1980's, with a 3,500 square foot hardwood floor and a beautiful social room. We will have a midnight Martinalli's toast and singalong as in years past.

This is a fun friendly cheerful way to pass the New Year's Eve dancing in a beautiful hall to great music. And many people dressed formally. Your are welcome to dress comfortably too, if you want.

Last year we saw about 250 dancing the night away. Great fun for all.

NO partner required or expected. Many people arrive by themselves or with friends, and find dance partners.

We will have light refreshments, including vegetable, fruit, cheese, and cold cut platters.

There is a 3 hour crash course in Waltz, Polka, and Congress of Vienna from 7 to 10 pm on Tuesday December 26th at the First United Methodist Church 625 Hamilton Palo Alto 94301, upstairs in the Fellowship Hall upstairsl This class has been repeatedly requested, and we are pleased to offer this class just before the Ball. Cost is $15 for the three hours.

The Ball tickets are $25 per person prepaid. There will be no tickets at the door. We have sold out the last 4 years. We are limiting attendance this year.

Tickets can be paid online via paypal at www.fridaynightwaltz.com or directly to Scott Gamble P.O. Box 1555 Palo Alto CA 94302.

more information, ScottFNW@pway.com

There is lots of on street and UCB parking within two blocks. The UCB students are on break, hence lots of parking.

pictures of previous Balls.

Fairly tale props for 12/16

I am working on putting together some props for a Story Time theme window in which I try to decide which theme I am going to do for a window (to be done later). I wanted to have a bag of props for fairy tales and nursery rhymes to go through and reject.

What I have covered so far is Beauty and the Beast, and Little Miss Muffet.

If anyone has props or ideas for other tales and rhymes that might work, please let me know.

One item I would like to get is a small cape, suitable for a man or woman to wear, perhaps with fur.

Thanks!

Small request...

Hi there.

I just wanted to make a small request of the windows models. It's pretty simple, really.

If you are going to be modeling in the windows, please be sure to make it clear what you are going to be doing, to your friends or parents or whoever you happen to tell about it.

Here's the reason I am asking. Yesterday while working at the ticket gate, someone asked me when and where the Hula Dancers would be performing. Whaaaa? Hula Dancers? (I thought the guy might have lost his mind... ) I was polite about my confusion, and still tried to help him (-and the lady with him-) figure it out. He said they had dropped off the dancers at 2:30, and they'd (-the dancers-) been backstage ever since. Well, we gave up, and he said he'd keep looking.

A while later I was passing Dark Garden, and found what *must* have been the "Hula Dancers" he was looking for. (It was a lovely window, btw. ) They were the only Hula Dancers I could find, anyway. Now, I am just guessing that the gentleman was either only told part of the story, or he did not have a clear understanding of what was going on.

If he wasn't told the whole story, why? It's nothing to be ashamed of.

Or perhaps it was not made clear to him that it was for a "Modeling" pose, rather than a Dance Performance on a stage?

Perhaps you didn't expect them to attend your "performance"?

Now, if I'm *totally* wrong and there WAS indeed a Hula Dance performance somewhere within Dickens Fair yesterday, *please tell me!*. (I could not find it anywhere in the perfomance schedule, and no one else I spoke to knew of it. )

Thank you.

(P.S. This is not intended as a lecture. I'm just trying to straigten out the confusion, and try to avoid confusion in the future. I want to be able to help direct your friends and family to see you in the window. )

Since my window was so early on friday, most of my friends missed it and no one seems to have taken any photos. Does anyone have photos from friday?

On another note, how much warning are we going to get before being notified about appearing in windows beyond their audition window? I have a couple planned windows with friends that may or may not happen depending on the whims of the powers that be, but I do want to have time to practice ahead of time if I do get them.

Oh, and I've seen a lot of great windows this year. Keep it up everyone.

2005 DVD

I'm putting the final touches on the 2005 DVD today. This is a DVD-R full of slide shows consisting of over 1500 photographs of Dark Garden windows from Dickens Fair 2005.

It is a playable DVD-R suitable for use on most household DVD players. The DVD-R format is the most compatible format available today for writable DVD’s. While there is a high likelihood that it will play on nearly all newer DVD players, there is some probability that it will not play on some older players.

All windows are represented. Windows are accessible by model and by date. Please note that if you got a model cd from me, there are no new photos of you on the DVD. And not all photos from the model cd's were used, though all photos used on the DVD were included on the model cd's.

It will be available at the Dark Garden booth this year again and the price for the DVD is $15. (It will be available online shortly).

There are also some 2004 dvd's still available as well in case you missed them.

Modeling Workshop and Lacing Workshop information- with the address

We have a confirmation that the modeling workshop for Dark Garden Windows is on Nov 4 directly after the morning meeting (which I highly encourage anyone coming to the workshop to attend) at 11:15 in room 6.
The first two weekends of workshops are at:

Dickens Christmas Fair Workshop Weekends #1&2
November 4th and 5th, 11th,12th
Saturday & Sunday 10:00-5:30
Ingrid B. Lacy Middle School
1427 Palmetta Ave.
Pacifica, CA 94044

We also have a separate corset lacing workshop later on Nov 4th. This will also be in room 6 directly after lunch at 1:30. The schedule says we will be directly followed by auditions for French Postcards- the lacing workshop is a very useful workshop for French Postcard auditionees to take.

You may address any questions about the workshop to me or to the tribe. Michelle will be addressing any questions about window content. Please save all of those questions for the day of the workshop. I am still working on whether we can have a second workshop, but I am not very hopeful we will be able to work that out for this year.

We have a confirmation that the modeling workshop for Dark Garden Windows is on Nov 4 directly after the morning meeting (which I highly encourage anyone coming to the workshop to attend) at 11:15 in room 6 at the elementary school in Pacifica whose name I can not remember. I will send the address information out shortly.
Please save all of those questions for the day of the workshop. I apologize for being slow to get back to people, but I am working on your answers. Most specifically I do not yet know if there will be any plan for having another workshop opportunity for the people who are unable to make it on the first day of workshops. Generally we have not been able to offer another workshop (we start building our booth the following weekend), but I am waiting on a confirmation about this year.

Window theme ideas brainstorming

Gunfights, three musketeers, couple reading, greek goddess, Gypsy and glass ball reading, acrobat, Christmas themed and equestrian.... there have been so many ideas done SO well.

Are you full of ideas? Care to share the inspiration with the rest of us?

Comedy is always a good idea.

Since the men are not usually the main focus in the window here is a way to really contribute. Prop ideas and offers to loan us props are appreciated as well.

Please Support "The Great Race of London"

TALLY - HO!

I am sending this out to all of you to ask for your help. I have been given the honor of directing a new show at this year's Dickens Faire - "The Great Race of London". We are going to be racing miniature vintage bicycles through the streets of our London in a madcap race that will try to bring all of us together with pranks...booby-traps...and other bits that would occur during this race. For an in-depth introduction to the show...check out the following link:

http://tribes.tribe.net/greatraceoflondon/thread/ba92247c-5fd7-4999-8768-d8bf11fcba95

I cannot, unfortunately, finance "The Great Race" out of my own pocketbook (as much as I would like to). The Great Race's estimated budget is around a couple thousand dollars (that includes props...sets...etc....PLUS those vintage bikes can get expensive). So I have a proposed solution ... I am selling t-shirts to raise money for the show...and so that we may pay tribute to our favorite faire figurehead - Mr. Charles Dickens himself...our own Robert Young! I designed the shirts to not only help raise funds for "The Great Race" ...but that we may also have a "civilian" shirt to show our Dickens Fair pride during our more...ahem..."normal" lives. My other goal is to greet Robert Young with an ocean of "Who's Your Daddy" shirts during our first day of this year's workshops. *wink*

The price of the shirts will be $20 a piece (all sizes). Men's t-shirts will be printed on Hanes Beefy-Tee's and ladies' shirts on American crew neck t-shirts.

If you would like to purchase an official "Who's Your Daddy?" t-shirt, please send a check ($20 per shirt) made out to the director (Peter Overstreet) to the following address:

The Great Race of London
c/o Peter Overstreet
1012A Oak St.
Alameda, CA 94501

Don't forget to include the name of the person who will be claiming the shirts, and the sizes you would like!

I am accepting orders now, and will be accepting orders until Oct. 6, 2006. I must give my printers time to process our order.

All proceeds from the sale of these shirts will go into the production of "The Great Race of London". Your support will be gladly appreciated.

Here is the Men's:http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/8d6/52c/8d652c70-5cb9-46f2-8ac2-4504b6e22245

Here is the Ladies':http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/64c/026/64c026c8-74ce-450d-8abb-7e03ac64bbbf

The shirts will be ready, and handed out during the first day of workshops. Just come and find me (I'll be the one with all the t-shirts...and probably my pith helmet on), and pick up your shirt. For those of you who, for whatever reason, cannot make opening day of workshops, I will have your shirts waiting for you throughout the workshop dates.

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to our own Robert Young, who has graciously allowed me to use his image for such a madcap scheme! (Big hugs to you, Robert!)

Thanks for the support and understanding!

See you at Fair!
